2.3(G) Strength, Confidence, Courage, and Happiness
Gaining Inner Strength, Confidence, Courage, and Happiness:
When we talk about strength, we immediately think of our physical strength, and how much we can lift or push. But for our purposes, we are talking about our inner strength, and how strong we are emotionally inside. When you have inner strength, you know you can handle certain situations and challenges as they arise, or at least have the ability to handle them. So what makes us feel strong on the inside, and promote more “inner strength”? These are important questions we need to ask ourselves. So, take a moment to write down a few examples of times when you felt strong emotionally, and why. What were you doing, or what experience was happening at that moment?
It may be difficult to create those memorable moments that made us feel so strong, since they may have been specific, unplanned events. But, we can mimic the idea, by bringing it forth into our minds. This gives us a way to “practice” gaining inner strength, and the results can be amazing. Remember, that any time you bring a smile into the practice, the positivity you create will increase your results.
Repeat the above for Confidence, Courage, and Happiness. Write down instances that you can remember when you felt confident, courageous, and truly happy. What was the circumstance, and how were you able to feel this way? Remember the physical and emotional feelings you felt, and bring them into the next exercise.
Explanation:
Remember that we can purposely create tension in order to build our muscles, yet the mind can create emotional tension, on its own, based on our inability to feel safe at any given time. So, tension is not always a negative thing, especially when you are in control of it. We create tension when we work out, to build up our muscles. Remember that negative emotional tension, is different from physical tension. What we are creating here is physical tension and combining it with emotional positivity (smile), to create positivity within the body.
In yoga, we call this position the “Mountain Pose”, and for good reason. You can feel the energy flow through your body, and by this, creates a good base for promoting inner strength, confidence, courage, happiness and joy. Standing tall with our head held high, promotes the feeling of being grounded and confident. This position brings in both energy and peace, which can help us feel strong, safe, and secure inside. This is the perfect setting to promote inner strength, confidence, courage, happiness and joy within ourselves, since we can lack these when we suffer from anxiety.
