2.2 (A) Focus
Focus Techniques:
Focus techniques can be used to help a person relax. These techniques can also aide as a deterrent to those annoying thoughts that can interfere with our lives. When you focus on ONE thing, and one thing alone, the mind can't allow other thoughts in. It is as simple as that. So, we can use these exercises for relaxation, as well as to practice being able to focus on what is meaningful in the here and now. Our mind tends to wander, or focus on negativity that can interfere with our personal growth for success.
These techniques are geared to help you learn how to train your mind to focus on ONE thing, and one specific thing at a time. Take note on how long you can focus at first, and compare your progress over time, and write your results in your journal. This process will take time. As your mind wanders, don't get frustrated, just laugh it off and bring yourself back to the focus at hand. Over time, you will notice that it becomes easier to keep focused, and the mind will wander less.
(If you are new to this, to see your progress, you can set a timer next to you, and stop it when you notice your mind wander. Stopping yourself will also bring awareness to the fact that you recognize a "break" in your concentration, and that you will repeat this again. See how long it takes for the mind to wander, then try to increase that time, and make note of your progress!) Try them all, and take note of which ones work best for you.
As I just mentioned above, a deep focus on something can eliminate the mind from overwhelming you with thoughts. So, if you are one of those people who, once stress and anxiety start to build, experience that influx of thoughts, you may want to use focusing as a tool. Here are a couple of examples to try. It has been proven that when you focus in on one thing and one thing alone, your mind can’t allow any further thoughts in!
The next set of exercises can help you work on focus, which will snowball into other aspects of the program. Focusing is one of the keys to success in alleviating your anxieties. The mere fact that we can focus on whats important and positive in our lives, allows for negatives to not seem as important. Since the mind gives more attention to what you deem important, if you focus on something positive, negative thoughts can be alleviated from our mind.
Focusing can also be used as a relaxant. So anytime we are in need of relaxation, we can focus on one thing while we breathe, which keeps the mind concentrating on finding peacefulness inside.
