1.7 (F) Accepting Our Anxiety
Accepting our Anxiety:
Now that we are allowing ourself to feel, or understanding HOW to feel, we have to learn how to stop fighting our anxiety. We fight our anxiety when we feel it coming on and immediately get on the defensive, maybe even telling our body, "no, no, no!". This can cause us to tense up our body even more, and unfortunately, worsen the experience. Also, by falling into the fear, we are giving anxiety the additional attention it craves.
Remember that anxiety is a reaction, and that it will always pass. Let your body FEEL the anxiety, as the more you can accept, the easier it becomes to release it. Knowing that anxiety is only a reaction will help with your understanding, but when you allow yourself to feel not only your anxiety, but all the sensations surrounding the anxiety, you will be able to recognize the symptoms earlier and earlier. And the less attention you give the FEAR of the anxiety, and you can be more accepting, the easier it will be to release it.
If you are a person who suffers from severe anxiety, especially remember that you need to give yourself the appropriate amount of time to heal. When you break your ankle, you give your ankle the chance to heal, by staying off it, and resting it. If we treated our anxiety as a physical injury, we would probably release anxiety easier. If we just gave ourselves the right tools and resting time to heal, we would heal quicker and easier. As every bone heals differently, nerves will heal differently as well. So be patient with yourself, and give your mind and body as much time as it needs to heal appropriately.
Understand that an anxious body is in an overworked place. It is on edge, tired, frustrated, and in a vicious cycle that it can't seem to break free of. As mentioned above, imagine you place your mind in a cast, so to speak, like your ankle, and give it that chance to heal. Nurture it, keep it rested, and make it feel secure. The next sections will start to discuss and disclose relaxation techniques that can help calm the mind and body, while also soothing the nerves. You will gather new ideas and help initiate and develop new healthy habits. The next section will start you on your journey into the wellness you desire...
